The effects come from an opioid-like molecule called //salvinorin A//. It is endemic to the Sierra Mazateca in Oaxaca, Mexico, growing primarily in the cloud forest, and were traditionally used fresh, either crushed and mixed with water, or rolled up and chewed, when other plants (//[[ololiuqui|ololiuqui]]// and //[[psilocybes|teonanácatl]]//) were unavailable. The effects from oral use can last as long as two hours. Effects from smoking are far shorter.
